*Update on Sylvia Blyden Case!!*

Magistrate Hannah Bonnie said she (the Magistrate) is sick and so matter adjourned and Sylvia Blyden sent back to prison.

Despite the magistrate promising at the last sitting to consider Blyden’s bail request today, if she issue a statement to stop the media and her supporters from speaking publicly about the case, the Magistrate instead sent Blyden back to Prison for an indefinite period.

Blyden had already obeyed the orders from the Magistrate and issued the required public statement distancing herself from all media reports and public discussion about her case.

What an error! Can the Magistrate force Blyden to stop CNN, BBC, Reuters, New York Times, Washington Post, The Guardian, Aljazeera, CPJ, Amnesty, Human Rights Watch from reporting about the case?

This is a clear violation of Blyden’s human rights, nobody should be forced or coerced into issuing an apology to the authorities while in detention.

“Authorities in Sierra Leone have once again shown their disregard for the free press by repeatedly arresting newspaper publisher Sylvia Olayinka,” said Angela Quintal, CPJ’s Africa program coordinator, in New York. “Blyden should never have been arrested in the first place, let alone re-arrested for allegedly speaking about her case. She must be released immediately and see all the charges against her dropped.”…/sierra-leone-journalist-sylvia-olayinka-…/ ©️Pipul Pikin Network 19 June 2020
